Teaching Approaches & Aims

I have 10+ years of experience teaching the drum kit privately in homes, schools, colleges and even in prisons. From the beginner hobbyist to more advance students, both children and adults, I tailor my teaching to individual needs and I aim to provide a fun programme of lessons that connect to your goals, giving you guidance and direction so you can meet your own targets.

In all my lessons I use a multi-sensory (Visual, Auditory, Read/Write, Kinaesthetic) approach to teaching encompassing the use of technology. This approach to teaching supports the development of skill and technique on the instrument whilst also enabling a student to begin a journey of self discovery into their strengths as a learner.

As I myself am a dyslexic musician I have found this to be incredibly beneficial to strategising and building an effective road map for my own study. However, I still find this to be a successful methodology for both students with and without learning difficulties.

I am available to cover such topics as:
• All drum grades 1-8 (I have a 100% pass record for every student that entered into an examination)
• Technique/Rudiments
• Audition/Exam preparation
• Playing for fun and learning songs
• Creativity and musicianship

I am fully DBS checked and certification is available on request.

How the Lessons work

Learning the drum kit from the comfort of your home has never been easier! I offer one-to-one lessons online via either Skype or Zoom. Whether you have an electronic or an acoustic drum kit I will be able to help you with the set up of learning online. Even if you do not have a kit, lessons can still take place with practice pad and a pair of sticks!

Online lessons do require a tablet, smart phone or computer with the Skype or Zoom software installed, along with a good internet connection.

First lesson is free! For a free 30 min tester session and help with setup, please get in touch.

First lesson
In any first lesson I like to understand more about your past experiences, current intentions and aspirations as well as your musical tastes through a short conversation so we can strategise an action plan together.

Beginners
For any complete beginners, I aim to have you playing along with music within a month of starting lessons. PDF’s, audio files and video lesson resources will be made available from the first lesson onwards.

To discuss your targeted aims as well as available lesson times, please feel free to send me a message!

Testimonials

"Jack started teaching my son (Luke) when he was 8 years old. His technique to inspire and reach a young boy was incredible and to this day Jack remains a very special person to Luke. Luke has progressed to grade 6 and came top 40 in Young Drummer of the year competition. Highly recommended."

“Jack has taught our very active 8 year-old for nearly a year. He’s done a fantastic job teaching over Zoom, keeping him engaged and encouraged with really helpful written resources and videos from his YouTube channel to complement the lessons. Listening to K practice by playing along to classic rock songs has brought a smile to everyone’s faces. hats off to anyone who can effectively teach to younger children remotely – Jack certainly can.”
